The Vanishing Half, by Brit Bennett
This was a hard book to put down; every chapter had me asking more questions and wanting to know what was going to happen next. Though the story jumped around, spanning the life of twin sisters and their daughters, it was easy to follow and connect with each character. Author Brit Bennet created incredible character development and detailed scenes so realistically. One thing that stood out to me was how racism exists on so many levels. In this book it showed how white people look down on people of color (racism), but also explored how lighter skinned people of color look down on darker skinned people of color (colorism, another byproduct of white supremacy). The Vanishing Half is an intriguing exploration of race, identity, and family love.
